ARENA CHILLER UPDATE:
Village of Burns Lake staff have been working with suppliers and installers to ensure a return to regular arena and curling rink seasons as soon as possible. As a means of keeping the public informed of relevant progress, please see the updates below:
- On September 12th, Mayor & Council approved staff to move forward with an option to replace the failed chiller with a new, upgraded plate-and-frame style chiller.
- This option is optimal for several reasons:
- Reduced timeframe for production (when compared to a “like-for like” replacement)
- Increased serviceability
- Significantly longer expected lifespan.
- It replaces one unit with 2 smaller units; this provides redundancy in the system so that future service issues can be attended to without loss of arena functionality.
- Contractors are expected on site in Mid-November to begin the work of removing the old chiller and preparing for the new one.
- The new chiller is expected to arrive in early December, and installation will begin.
- Installation is expected to take 2-3 weeks.
- Once the plant is commissioned and started up, the process of ice building will begin.
- The target for the arena ice to be ready for public use is early in January.
- Curling ice is projected to be ready for use by the end of January.
- This option is optimal for several reasons:
In the meantime, the arena will continue to be available for dry-floor bookings up until December 15, 2023.
